Religious Affiliation

Age, commercial interests, occupation and social standing melt away to some extent in religious affiliations. Believers in certain religious tenants cling together and have occasions to find each other outside of church settings. Religion played an important role in Palmyra. Joseph Smith records, “There was in the place where we lived an unusual excitement on the subject of religion. . . . no small stir and division amongst the people, some crying “Lo, Here! And others, “Lo there!” The importance of religion was still strong at the time the pages were lost. The dominate religion in town was Presbyterian.

In 1938 Palmyra was recognized by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! The reason for the recognition is the intersection at Main and Canandaigua/Church Streets which features a church on each of its four corners. The corners have been dubbed “God’s corner” (“Palmyra New York: Queen of Erie Canal Town!” Pamphlet)
