John Hurlbut IV (1799–1867)

John Hurlbut IV, son of John Hurlbut III and Hannah Millet, was born on October 30, 1799. He married Elizabeth R. Post in 1827 in Palmyra. To their union were born seven children. He later married Helen Christina Van Ness in 1843.

John IV was listed in the 1830 US Federal Census as having a household of two males under age 5, one male age 30-40, and one female age 20-30. On December 4, 1833, he signed the “Testimony of 51 Neighbors,” later printed in Mormonism Unvailed.[1]

A decade later, John IV was listed in the 1840 US Federal Census. The members listed in his household were two males under the age of 5, two males age 5-9, two males ages 10-14, one male age 40-49, and one female age 30-39. John IV died on October 2, 1867 in Palmyra.[2]
