Gurdon T. Smith was born on May 3, 1806 in Palmyra. He was considered “a foster son” of Lemuel Durfee, Sr.[1] Gurdon married Melissa Starkweather on May 23, 1832 in Ridgeway, Orleans County, New York. To their union were born five daughters. He and his family lived in Palmyra. Gurden died on September 16, 1898 in Palmyra.
