Frederick U. Sheffield, son of Paul Sheffield and Hannah Allyn, was born on July 6, 1793 in Montville, New London County, Connecticut. He married Lucy Niles Stoddard on October 17, 1826 in Phelps, New York. To their union were born five children.
Frederick met with leaders of the Western Presbyterian Church in Palmyra on 29 March 1830, three days after the Book of Mormon was for sale at the E. B. Grandin bookstore. At that meeting, it was resolved that Lucy, Hyrum, and Samuel Smith be suspended from attending the Presbyterian Church. Frederick witnessed that Lucy, Hyrum, and Samuel Smith had neglected public worship and sacrament in the Presbyterian Church.[1]
Frederick was a brother-in-law of Calvin Stoddard. He died on March 9, 1878 in Brooklyn, New York. He was buried in the Newark Cemetery in Wayne County, New York.
