Another way to be a “man in high standing” was to be a doctor. Doctors at the time were respected and trusted. Their advice on all subjects was sought. They would know something about a variety of events in town. Lucy Harris might confide in a doctor. Arthur B. Deming wrote in 1888, Lucy Harris stole the manuscript and passed it off to “a certain Dr. Seymour.”
